2009 150hp Cummins Diesel “Dolores Catherine” is a beautiful wooden vessel that was originally built in 1936 as a shrimper by the Covacevich yard in Biloxi Mississippi.
She is a trawler, but a specific style and layout known along the Gulf Coast as a Biloxi Lugger. She is fuel efficient for long passages through coastal water, but her roots
are in the barrier islands of the Gulf Coast. The Chandeleur Islands are the most famous of these. This bird sanctuary has been in place long before humans, and it is teeming with redfish, trout and flounder. The nearby Biloxi Marsh is a fisherman and duck hunters paradise.
These Biloxi Luggers have traditionally been commercial fishing boats or motherships for small fishing skiffs that are carried on the roof or daisy chained in tow. The most experienced diesel mechanics and captains would prefer to embark on a voyage around the world with a proven 1100 hour engine that had its 1000 hour service than one with half of the hours, as the 1100 hour engine is proven.
The pods were just rebuilt ($30k), the bottom was just painted and all Volvo services are current. The current
owner brought her to the shipyard and said “do everything to make this the most reliable, best running and ocean worthy 50’ Prestige on the market”. Other than commercial fishing boats and ferries, few Volvo engines will ever see the day they need a major service.
