In this dynamic role, You will lead the development and implementation of new backssments for factors affecting fish use of the Kalama Falls ladder. enjoy doing, Oversee and lead life cycle monitoring and other research activities and collect data in rivers by snorkeling: Oversee operation and data collection from the adult fish trap at Kalama Falls Hatchery and adult spawning ground and snorkel surveys.
Lead implementation of mark-recapture studies as part of Viable Salmonid Population monitoring on the Kalama River above Kalama Falls Hatchery. This will include coordinating and participating in summer steelhead snorkel surveys in the Kalama and assisting other basin leads by providing staff and participants directly in their snorkels. Maintain project data in agency databases such as JMX and TWS. In coordination with a supervisor, use statistical principles and ecological framework to estimate fish abundance and biological characteristics, fishery and hatchery impacts on fish populations, environmental impacts on fish populations, and other selected study objectives.
Serve on an interdisciplinary team responsible for implementation of monitoring actions and hatchery reform: Have knowledge on hatchery-wild steelhead interaction studies for the interdisciplinary team, including knowledge of historical data and results from the Kalama Steelhead Research program. Supervise professional and technical staff: Set goals and objectives, develop strategies to implement and develop performance measurements and create standards for the purpose of ensuring individual and program performance objectives are met.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Work Setting, including hazards: The incumbent will work in an office or field environment, on a seasonal basis. Fieldwork will involve working outdoors and exposed to hot and cold temperatures, conditions with wet slippery footing. Snorkel in cold, fast-flowing, whitewater conditions up to six (6) miles per day and walk over rough terrain in varying environmental conditions.
Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations. Occasionally lift, with or without assistance, large, live fish (typically up to 30 pounds). Traps have moving parts, including winches for raising, lowering, and adjusting trap positions and are exposed to inclement weather and are subject to variable river flows. Schedule: Typically, Monday – Friday, 5 days, 40 hours per week. Occasionally, this position is expected to work more than 40 hours per week, beyond core hours (potentially including nights), and outside of the normal work week such as weekends and holidays to complete necessary field and office duties.
Travel Requirements: Travel periodically throughout Washington and to other states for meetings, conferences, training, and special projects. Travel occurs on a regular basis from the office to the sampling sites. Tools and Equipment: Vehicles, pontoon rafts, backpack electrofishers, passive integrated transponder (PIT) tag applicators, temperature loggers and downloading equipment, coded wire tag (CWT) and passive integrated transponder (PIT) tag wands, citizen band (CB) radios, GPS units, and snorkeling gear. Customer Interactions: Interaction with the public generally occurs through landowner contacts, presentations, and data requests.
Regular interactions also occur with local, state, and federal agencies. Qualifications REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS A Bachelor's degree in fisheries, wildlife management, natural resource science, or environmental science. AND Three (3) years of professional experience in one (1) or more of the following: Fish management or fish research. Wildlife management or wildlife research. Habitat management or habitat research. Please Note: Closely related qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-by-year basis.
A Master’s degree in the applicable science will substitute one (1) year of the required experience. A Ph. D. in the applicable science may be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience. Certifications/Licenses: Valid Driver’s License. Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment: Valid first-aid and CPR training card within six (6) months of hire and maintained accordingly. WDFW snorkel training and certification, with completion within six (6) months of hire and renewal expected annually. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of the Mitchell Act Biological Opinion as it relates to fish management requirements and hatchery operations.
Knowledge of salmon and steelhead ecology and adult and juvenile population backssment methods, study designs, and analyses. Experience conducting statistical analysis and familiarity with associated computer programs/languages such as R, JAGS, STAN, Win BUGS. Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and Power Point. Puget Sound Regions biological backssments to identify NSO and riparian areas most receptive to habitat enhancement through commercial thinning and structure creation.
Coordinate with Unit Managers to identify commercial thinning opportunities in Spotted Owl Management Units (SOMU’s). Document thinning sales with a NSO or riparian habitat enhancement memo. Utilize Excel, Word, Power Point and video to demonstrate the progress of Thinning Proviso objectives. Prepare written Thinning Proviso reports and data summaries documenting backssments and recommendations bi-annually. Provide consulting services to district and region staff related to the effects of forest land management activities on wildlife and wildlife habitats such the creation of high quality NSO habitat and the survey of next best Movement Roosting and Foraging (Mo RF) habitat.
Designing treatments to accelerate suitable NSO habitat conditions in young stands and move previously thinned stands into functional Mo RF habitat. Work with region biologist and division scientists to design a survey to identify levels of habitat components in Next Best Mo RF habitat. Recruit and train DNR staff to execute the survey of existing stand conditions. Facilitate the addition of missing habitat components such as down wood, snags and nest boxes utilizing private contractors.
Evaluate unique habitat features such as balds, talus, cliffs and caves utilizing DNR’s HCP policies and procedures. Assist the commercial thinning lead, successfully recruit, organize and facilitate the day-to-day work of project layout and management. Help recruit, organize and facilitate the day-to-day work of presales teams. Assist in the preparation of timber sales documents such as mapping, SEPA, Forest Practice Applications and Water Type Modifications to name a few. Meet regularly with the commercial thinning lead to facilitate Thinning Proviso objectives.
Helping with timber sale layout, sale compliance and other field work as needed. Thinning treatments must be operationally feasible with the objective to accelerate attaining a specific HCP defined riparian and/or NSO habitat condition. Each treatment will be modeled in the Forest Vegetation Simulation (FVS) program using collected stand data to demonstrate optimal thinning levels to obtain habitat objectives. Represent the South Puget Sound Region as the Thinning Proviso biologist in public/stakeholder collaboration Qualifications Required Qualifications: A Bachelor's degree in wildlife management, natural resource science, or environmental science AND one year of professional experience in wildlife management or wildlife research, or habitat management or habitat research OR a combination of equivalent education and experience.

Duties Some of what our Marine Species Data Steward will enjoy doing, Marine species data stewardship and management, including acquiring, translating, verifying, organizing, distributing, synthesizing, and analyzing spatial and tabular species data: Conduct quality control, translation, and processing of species data. Incorporate new data and maintain existing species data in WDFW enterprise species databases. Use or modify scripts and other automated geo-processing routines for managing data. Write and maintain business rules, metadata, and other documentation for species data management.
Support marine species surveys and other field data collection: Coordinate with biologists to define survey data collection procedures and protocols and to align survey protocols with species data rules. Coordinate with IT staff on the development and testing of surveys apps, tools, and scripts for appropriately collecting, monitoring and quality control of survey data. Support field biologists in the use of data collection software and applications. Support the use of software and systems for managing data collected from camera traps and other, indirect species data collection surveys such as telemetry, acoustic recordings, or drone imagery.
Support marine species evaluations, backssments, planning, and reporting: Compile, standardize and simplify data for use in species evaluations. Identify appropriate data and advise staff on proper use and interpretation. Create and provide maps, summaries, graphs, and other data derived from species surveys. Support marine species data requests from external customers, and data sharing or data exchange between WDFW and external entities: Identify appropriate data and compile this data, and related maps and species summaries, into request-specific, data sharing packages.
Distribute custom species data packages and advise requestee on proper use and interpretation. Evaluate and ensure compliance with species data sensitivity policies and other data sharing guidelines. Provide species data for permitting or compliance-reporting processes. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work Setting, including hazards: This position primarily works in an office setting that includes reading, writing, phone, and computer use. This position involves occasional participation in surveys and other field activities that require working outdoors in terrestrial and aquatic environments.
This may include working under conditions such as 12-hour workdays, inclement weather, walking over rough terrain or riding in rough water conditions and hiking long distances while carrying a light load of (up to 40 pounds) personal and survey equipment including but not limited to a GPS unit, camera, laptop and rangefinder Working in or around boats in marine conditions and environments. Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations. Schedule: Typically, Monday – Friday, 8:00 A. M. – 5:00 P. M. May need to adjust the work schedule to meet occasional business needs such as fieldwork.
This includes early mornings, evenings, or weekends. Travel Requirements: Occasional travel to WDFW offices and WDFW Wildlife Areas, conferences, trainings, or meetings with other agencies and external entities. Occasional travel to field sites for participation in surveys and other outdoor activities. Qualifications REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: A Bachelor's degree in wildlife management, environmental science, biology or a related natural resource discipline. AND Three (3) years of professional experience in management, field-technician or research jobs involving wildlife, habitats, forestry, or a similar biological, environmental and natural resources field. OR Two (2) years as a Fish & Wildlife Biologist 2.
Please Note: A Master’s degree in an applicable science discipline will substitute one (1) year of the required experience. A Ph. D. in the applicable science may be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience. Certifications/Licenses: A Valid State Driver’s license. Managing electronic records of species surveys. Scripting languages, such as Python or R, for automating data management. Statistical software and understanding of statistical methods for evaluating species, species populations and species-habitat relationships. Knowledge of: Comprehensive knowledge of principles of conservation biology and wildlife management. Familiarity with: Washington state species, their habitats, ranges and distribution. Field methods and survey protocols for monitoring and recording species and their habitats. Ability to: Identify, organize, and document data for subsequent use in backssments and analyses.
Learn new technologies and stay current with best practices for data management. Communicate complex subjects in a manner that is appropriate to both the topic and the audience. Accurately read, interpret, and retain information from technical reports, survey protocols, journal articles, maps and graphs. Work in natural environments or remote locations and participate in ground, water or aerial-based surveys. Operate electronic field equipment such as Global Position Systems (GPS) units, telemetry equipment, and mobile data collection devices.
