guidance, education and supervision of 3 professionals, including the Federal and International Tax Manager, Sr. Tax Accountant and the Tax Accountant. This position is responsible for the development of all tax strategies with the exception of Property tax and the timely and accurate review and signoff of all corporate tax returns, excluding Property Tax.
This individual is also responsible for ensuring that all taxes are accounted for appropriately in accordance with GAAP. They also serve as the main point of contact to external auditors. The successful candidate will have experience with Corptax compliance and provision software and Oracle Financials and possess a process improvement
mindset. The Director, Corporate taxation is also responsible for tax research and special projects. RESPONSIBILITIES Ensure timely preparation and filing of tax returns utilizing approved tax strategies.
Review and approve all tax accounting calculations, journal entries, schedules and roll forwards necessary for financial statement reporting purposes in Corptax provision software. Responsible for ensuring that all account reconciliations are completed in a timely and accurate manner. This role will partner with Controller's group in execution of these duties. Ensure that forecasted income tax expense and payments are accurately reflected in the quarterly financial forecasts and the
four year plan. Investigate and research current and future federal, state and international tax implications of actual and proposed company business decisions and the effects of new federal, state and international tax laws on existing situations.
Formulate and implement tax strategies for the Company and subsidiaries related to all areas of taxation with the exception of Property Tax. Conduct tax related research and forecasting based upon current and pending/proposed legislation. Monitor/analyze tax legislation and court cases that may influence outcomes. Investigate incentives if applicable. Determine tax depreciation methods used based upon tax forecast.
Approve all tax depreciation calculations and reconciliations/roll forwards of tax fixed assets and depreciation on a quarterly basis. Oversee all tax compliance functions including tax accounting, tax provision, tax footnotes and disclosures, administrative hearings, audits, appeals and litigation. Supervise staff on any audits that arise. Sign all tax returns and tax payments. Review and approve all tax provision and tax language in debt and lease agreements. Oversee the application of relevant U. S. GAAP for tax accounting. Maintain the integrity of internal controls as they pertain to the Tax department.
Possess the ability to work well with all business units to ensure tax components are considered in overall business strategy decisions. Serve as the primary tax liaison with the Company's external auditors, tax advisors and Revenue agents. Identify, hire and supervise tax consultants and attorneys Possess proven ability to implement tax process improvements, automation and systems. Possess passion for employee coaching, mentoring and development. Serve as Player/Coach with oversight of a small department. QUALIFICATIONS 13-15 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Undergraduate accounting degree required; Masters in Accountancy or Taxation highly desirable. Demonstrated history as a team player and client service approach. Must have unimpeachable integrity, possess strong ethics and values and have the ability to maintain confidentiality. Must be a " hands on" professional, with strong management and supervisory skills, who leads by example and motivates individuals at the company, at all levels, to strive for excellence and success. Must have professional interpersonal and communication skills to interact effectively with all levels of the company, and with railroad counterparts.
Highly developed organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize, handle multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines, is a minimum requirement. Proficiency with Corptax provision and compliance and MS Office programs required; Oracle knowledge and implementation experience a plus Up-to-date knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles pertaining to tax including and detailed knowledge of current tax legislation Ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex documents.
Ability to respond effectively to sensitive inquiries or complaints. Ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics to management, public groups, and appropriate tax authorities. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
