timeliness and conformance to established standards; major work tasks are covered by instructions or procedures and unusual situations are referred to a supervisor. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Obtains and records animal and livestock case history on the Tohono O'odham Nation.

Educates the Tohono O'odham community on the importance of spaying and neutering in order to control the animal population. Collects specimens and performs laboratory procedures. Prepares animals, instruments, and equipment for surgery. Maintains records of work performed. Assists in diagnostic, medical, and surgical procedures on large and small animals. Provides emergency and weekend on-call veterinary

coverage. May travel to communities to assist with aid to animals. Keeps facilities, equipment and property clean and sterile. Assists law enforcement, when call upon; assists with animal removal and may quarantine dog bite suspects.

UNTIL: Until Filled, First Review After 2 Weeks Posted JOB DUTIES ESSENTIAL DUTIES Works under the direct supervision of the shelter veterinarian.

Must hold a current registered veterinary technician license in the state of New Mexico. Responsible for teaching and training veterinary assistants employed in the animal medical department.

Responsible for day to day operations pertaining to set up of surgery, records, drug calculations and administration of surgical drugs. Overseeing pre-op physical exams done by vet assistants. Ability to intubate, administer gas anesthesia, and monitor heart and respiration rates of surgical patients, and to teach assistants to perform these same

tasks. Ability to place I. V. catheters, administer injectable drugs I. V. I. M. and S. Q. Ability to calculate I. V. fluid dose rates and drug dosages under the supervision of the veterinarian for shelter, public, and CCP animals.

Must be able to teach and instruct vet assistants in such protocols. Responsible for anesthetic induction of all publicly owned animals. Ability to maintain a veterinary laboratory and to utilize equipment necessary to make medical diagnoses, including but not limited to blood chemistry machines, microscopes, fungal cultures, and fecal exams. Responsible for training vet assistants to perform such tasks. Maintain all paperwork on each surgery in compliance

with NM state law. Ability to maintain a controlled drug log in compliance with the state shop board and have it available for inspections.

Manage inventory and record orders for all supplies and drugs needed for the animal medical department and any medical aspect of the animal shelter. Must be comfortable with data entry and use of computers and software programs. Ability to multitask and coordinate several procedures simultaneously as directed by the shelter veterinarian. Ability to coordinate a high volume of surgical procedures on a daily basis. Must have excellent customer service skills and ability to communicate medical information effectively to both staff and public.

Must be willing and able to be euthanasia certified by the state of New Mexico and perform euthanasia under the supervision and discretion of the shelter veterinarian and/or director. Ability to train assistants to maintain medical equipment and medical facilities. NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES Demonstrate knowledge of and adherence to FRAS policies and procedures. Ensure a safe work environment, follow all safety guidelines, and model safe work practices. Take immediate action to address any safety concerns that could place a staff member, volunteer, customer, animal, or the organization at risk.

Follow direction of staff veterinarian. Assist as an expert witness in animal cruelty cases. The duties listed above are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. QUALIFICATIONS This position is subject to the City of Farmington's Drug and Alcohol Testing Policy which includes: pre-employment testing, post-accident testing, random testing, reasonable suspicion testing, return to duty testing, and follow-up testing.

Diploma from an accredited veterinary technical school. Current registered veterinary technician license issued from the state of New Mexico. Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record for the past three years or state of current residency. Excellent communication skills. Excellent organizational skills with ability to multitask and prioritize medical cases. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds of animal onto a surgical table with assistance. Ability to keep vet tech license current through continuing education courses. Ability to cope with emotional stress of euthanasia and medical deaths.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, peers, supervisors and the public. Ability to work under stressful situations and handle them appropriately and effectively. Ability to meet deadlines. Ability to exercise sound judgment in evaluating situations and in making decisions. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and directions as set forth by the shelter veterinarian and/or the director. TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED Animal capture equipment, handheld radios, first aid equipment, catch poles, leashes, gloves, chemicals associated with animal medical department cleaning materials including but not limited to chlorine bleach and hydrogen peroxide.

Medical equipment such as gas anesthesia, apnea monitor, recovery equipment, needles and syringes, surgery tables and lights, blood chemistry machines, microscope, otoscope, stethoscope, dental instruments and ultrasonic scaler, IV equipment.
