Veterinary Technician/Nurse Student Externship Program gives vet tech/nursing students hands-on experience in emergency medicine while working alongside our credentialed, emergency veterinary technicians (known internally as Veterinary Nurses).

Students will focus on honing their emergency skills including obtaining patient vitals, processing laboratory samples, caring for hospitalized patients, triaging emerging cases, and collaborating in a fast-paced environment. If you're as interested in emergency medicine as we are, we'd love to have you! Note: This is an unpaid externship and rabies vaccinations are required unless your school's rabies mitigation policy allows you to be unvaccinated

and still handle unvaccinated pets. Flexibility: YOU Choose the length of your externship to meet your school's requirements Location: YOU choose where you'd like to extern (depending on hospital bandwidth) Mentorship: YOU will be supported by a credentialed veterinary technician (VEG Veterinary Nurse) Focus: YOU will be fully-immersed in what emergency medicine truly entails REQUIREMENTS Currently enrolled in an AVMA accredited veterinary technology/nursing program (or one actively seeking accreditation) and will be in a class that requires externship hours and/or skills.

This application is not for veterinary students or veterinary assistant students - only veterinary technology/nursing students.

Your externship must need to begin within 6 months of application. You must be vaccinated for rabies unless your school's rabies mitigation policy allows unvaccinated students to handle unvaccinated animals.

We have a Veterinary Social Worker on staff who is available to employees and clients as needed. Summary: A Veterinary Technician Specialist is a high-level veterinary technician

practicing at the top of their certification in their chosen specialty. A VTS exhibits clinical excellence, independence and leadership in their specialty and department.

Responsibilities: Obtain and record detailed patient histories, perform physical examinations and patient observations. Perform basic to advanced anesthesia. Obtain and prepare samples for advanced diagnostic testing. Advanced understanding of patient diagnostic results and the ability to collaborate with veterinarian on plans for the next steps of care. Demonstrates an ability and awareness to maintain a safe and clean work environment and hold others accountable to the same. Ensure that medicine is delivered in compliance

with national, state, and local regulations. Demonstrate leadership that fosters a culture of learning and continuous development within the technician/nursing care team.

Master detailed record keeping regarding patient history, condition, treatments, progress, and communications. The ability to provide sound guidance and feedback on all aspects of nursing care, including but not limited to protocols, pharmacology, restraint, etc. Advanced knowledge of pharmacology, including medication/treatment protocols, mechanism of action, drug calculations and dosing, safe handling/use/disposal of medications, side effects, contraindications with other medications.

Education, License and Job Requirements: Current credential CVT/RVT/LVT/LVMT Specialty certification (VTS) Excellent verbal and written communication, analytical, interpersonal, and active listening skills The ability to think critically, work well under pressure, and troubleshoot with a certain level of autonomy in situations that require swift decisions. Outstanding communication skills to promote effective clinical training, client communication, and team building. Skills and Experience: Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a high- volume environment Strong leadership skills required.
