Budget Title: University Instructional Specialist (SL-5) Salary: $135,000 The Attending Veterinarian (AV) is charged with maintaining a program of appropriate veterinary care, designing and implementing preventative medicine programs, and providing health monitoring, diagnosis, treatment, and post-operative care for multiple species.

The AV is responsible for the health and welfare of all animals used in University protocols, the necessity for and components of treatment administered, and the necessity for euthanasia. The AV is charged with managing the daily care needs of the animals, providing necessary veterinary care, monitoring all use of animals by university personnel, and ensuring the highest standards of animal care are always met.

The AV helps in providing assurance of compliance with regulatory and accreditation bodies and in fostering strong communications with investigators, the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), and the animal care staff. The AV serves as a member of the IACUC with duties that include reviewing animal use protocols, assisting with policy improvements, supporting investigators in protocol development, assuring quality animal care, and participating in semiannual program review and inspections.

This position may be eligible for a hybrid work location under the NYS approved remote work location agreement. Specific responsibilities include: Delivering the highest level of technical and professional oversight of all animal care and use functions involving laboratory animals in an ethical and safe manner while fostering scientific excellence and highly collaborative research in the animal program. Promoting a positive culture of collaboration, compliance, service and integrity. Possessing a solution-oriented attitude with an understanding of the impact of decisions. Consultation and collaboration with university personnel, principal investigators, and researchers in effective methods of animal care and use.

Working with the Director of Laboratory Animal Facilities and animal care staff to maintain a preventive medicine program that may include quarantine, disease surveillance, and clinical health. Providing guidance to Veterinarians Technicians. Providing consultation to investigators regarding anesthesia, analgesia, breeding, and other study-related needs related to protocol development. Performing survival surgery, as well as necropsies on rodents. Preparation and delivery of training, guidance, and instructional programs to maintain compliance with various animal welfare regulations, as well as ensuring all practices are in accordance with AAALAC, PHS, USDA, and NYDOH standards.

Serving in the AAALAC reaccreditation process. Serving as a member of the IACUC. Participating in Post Approval Monitoring, IACUC, USDA, NIH, and AAALAC inspections. Conducting pre-review of new, renewals, and modifications of animal use protocols. Participation in IACUC semi-annual inspections of animal facilities and assists investigators in complying with various animal care and use requirements.

Remaining current on current in advancements in veterinary techniques and surgical procedures, professional trends and regulations, and fulfilling continuing education requirements of licensures. Potential service as a member of other institutional compliance committees (Institutional Biosafety, Radiation Safety, Stem Cell Research Oversight committees). Obtain additional training along guided growth pathways offering roles in addition to direct nursing care such as veterinary technician credentialing, trainer role, community outreach, and leadership. Veterinary Assistants can additionally (where permitted by law): Administer, monitor, and maintain patients under general anesthesia with or without mechanical ventilation for patients with varied levels of risk. Perform advanced vascular access techniques including jugular catheter placement, sampling line placement, central line placement, intraosseous catheterization, and arterial catheterization.

Perform advanced diagnostic techniques including ultrasonography and paracentesis, Participate in formulating treatment, anesthetic, and nursing care plans.
