album and as an original motion picture soundtrack, Yentl contains the songs, sung by Streisand and written by Michel Legrand and Alan and Marilyn Bergman, that the character played by Streisand sings as internal monologues in the film, sometimes with spoken dialogue interspersed.
(The album is filled out by " studio versions" of two of the songs, " The Way He Makes Me Feel" and " No Matter What Happens, " played on contemporary electronic instruments, rather than in the orchestral settings used for the rest of the songs. ) With such a thematic base, the music has an unusual consistency, and written specifically for Streisand, it makes use of her emotional
expressiveness, phrasing, and timing as a singer. But it was also written as a complement to the film and on its own comes across as a group of isolated musical plot highlights rather than as a coherent song cycle.
(Yentl won an Academy Award for Best Original Song Score. ) A fantastic soundtrack, this record shows Barbra at her full potential as a singer and artist overall, you can tell this was a labor of love. All of the songs flow very well and even though they're all ballads they're very dynamic. A Piece of Sky is an absolute career highlight with its long note in the end, one of the best of her career. Definitely an essential album in Barbra's catalog, not to mention how iconic it is as well.

The Astronauts " Surfin' With The Astronauts" Boulder, CO is not the first place one would think when it comes to surfing, and I doubt that, like it says in the liner notes, that these guys went on to invent
snowboarding. Still, through their version of Lee Hazlewood's " Baja" they managed to cement themselves early on in the list of staples when it comes to the genre. The album itself is quite good as well. As can be expected (especially since the genre was so young), it is basically the repertoire they were playing at shows, and consisted largely of the handful of other surf songs that were out there.
They do a great job with two other Hazlewood songs (" Movin" and " Batman" - not the the theme to the show) and the Henry Mancini-penned " Banzai Pipeline" Of course their take son " Pipeline" and " Misirlou" are here. Only thing

IV Rattus Norvegicus Rattus Norvegicus Review by David Cleary Like the Vibrators, the Stranglers were an older band which managed to gain visibility and success through association with Britain's punk movement. Musically, the group is much more polished than some of their rawer brethren such as the Adverts and Siouxsie and the Banshees.
The Stranglers' early work is most properly described as stripped-down pop played with a hardcore sensibility; fairly lengthy songs with frequent solo breaks, prominent keyboard usage, and occasional employment of vocal harmony sets them apart from their peers. But snarling lead singing that puts forth macho/critical/distasteful lyrics predominates here,
clearly showing the group's punk affinity. Most of the songs on this album fit the description of hardcore pop to a tee, but there are a few deviations from this model.
" Princess of the Streets" is a slow-tempo selection with blueslike echoes. The ambitious " Down in the Sewer" crosses the concept of episodic numbers like the Who's " A Quick One" with early-'60s instrumentals. And the energetic " London Lady" is almost a true punk song -- or at least as close as the band gets to one. While not the equal of their best album, No More Heroes, this release is solid and worthwhile, a rewarding listen. Tis album is regarded by some as a classic. NME
ranked it #196 in their list of Top 500 albums of all time, although that is a truly bizarre list.

If one album can be said to establish once and for all the genius of John Cale, this is it. The Academy In Peril" it is mainly divided in two genres; a more classical influenced part, where Cale finds himself mostly in front of the piano, but other times also with the violin, his main instrument.
These tracks are easily defined as Modern Classical, as they aren't any rock elements whatsoever. However, the other songs are still all instrumentals and using classical instruments such as piano and violin, but they have a much more strong Avant-Garde feel to them. An eerie aura surrounds these Experimental compositions, so the music turns out to be very unique sounding.

Produced by Brian Eno, the John Cage side also includes some great vocals by Robert Wyatt who had just been singing and drumming for The Soft Machine prior to this recording but had already begun his solo career. Steve Beresford and Fred Frith contribute their considerable skills on guitars. " As an album this unfolds so magnificently. Each track is quite understated but as the album rolls along its successively becomes more confounding as to why and how these works sit so damn well together. The succession of works from track one, all the way through is nothing less than an exemplar of beauty.
