Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources (IANR) is seeking applications for a Clinical Practice Veterinarian position.

This 12-month (calendar year), non-tenure track appointment will be at the rank of Lecturer.

The apportionment is 30% research and 70% teaching, with a salary range of $75K-$80K. This position will be located in Clay Center, Nebraska at the Great Plains Veterinary Educational Center. The Clinical Practice Veterinarian will contribute to the integrated research and teaching land-grant mission of the home unit and IANR, as an effective scholar and citizen, including supporting student

recruitment and IANR science literacy. This is appointment will be for three years, and reappointment will be made depending on satisfactory progression and execution of responsibilities as well as availability of funds.

This position participates in implementing the teaching and service component of the Great Plains Veterinary Educational Center (GPVEC), located at the U. S. Meat Animal Research Center (USMARC), Clay Center, Nebraska. The position is supervised directly by the Director of GPVEC. Recognizing that diversity enhances creativity, innovation, impact, and a sense of belonging, the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources (IANR) and the School of Veterinary Medicine and

Biomedical Sciences are committed to creating learning, research, Extension programming, and work environments that are inclusive of all forms of diversity.

Consistent with the University’s N2025 Strategic Plan , every person and every interaction are treated as important to our collective well-being and our ability to deliver on our mission. Specific duties for this position are: TEACHING RESPONSIBILITIES (70%): Teaching and directed service responsibilities are the primary focus for this position. The incumbent will be expected to average 0.70 FTE teaching as determined by the CASNR Academic Appointment Guidelines to participate in the GPVEC teaching program, including present and new courses (50% teaching as determined by the CASNR Academic Appointment Guidelines and 20% directed, scholarly service).

The incumbent will take an active role in the GPVEC teaching program in clinical food animal medicine and production management, including leadership in classroom and field teaching activities of veterinary medical students through lectures, demonstrations, and other educational efforts. Implementation of innovative teaching methodology, such as online instruction, is strongly encouraged. Specific course assignments may be changed over time based on GPVEC educational program needs.

The incumbent will participate in the day-to-day clinical care of the cattle, sheep, and swine populations at the USMARC as necessary to optimize and improve animal health and productivity while maintaining good rapport and complementary working relationships with the USMARC administration, scientists, staff, and other personnel. The incumbent will assume routine duties in concert with other staff, faculty, and the herd health veterinarian(s) at USMARC. This work will include occasional evening, weekend, and holiday duty. Veterinary medical clinical service for the USMARC herd includes herd health management as well as routine veterinary medical, surgical, obstetrical, and necropsy practices associated with large herds of cattle, sheep, and swine.

Performance of necropsy duties includes recording necropsy findings, collecting and submitting specimens for laboratory tests, interpreting results, preparing final reports, and discussing interpretations with students. RESEARCH RESPONSIBILITIES (30%): The incumbent will be engaged in research and provide support and participate as a team member in other research projects with GPVEC faculty, UNL faculty, USMARC scientists, ISU faculty and others to support and enhance the GPVEC mission when opportunities arise.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES: The incumbent will serve as an engaged member of the GPVEC team, including, but not limited to internal and external functions such as faculty and faculty/staff meetings, open houses, tours, and outreach activities and events. This engagement also includes other responsibilities fitting the expertise of the incumbent and needs of GPVEC and SVMBS. In addition to the above-described duties, the individual will be expected to accept committee assignments, reporting responsibilities, and other special ad hoc assignments as requested at the administrative unit, college/division, institute, and/or university level.

Yes Description of Work: Overview This position is based in Fremont, NE with the geographic accountability region of Dodge County.

The major responsibility of this position is to provide regional leadership for Nebraska Extension’s 4-H and Youth Development Program.

This extension professional is expected to interact closely with 4-H clientele in these communities and deliver programs in their geographic area. This twelve-month, non-tenure track position carries the title of open rank extension educator or extension instructor, depending on the candidate’s level of education. Those possessing a graduate-level degree in the requested area of instruction will be considered for an

open rank educator position, a full-time, promotable, non-tenure track appointment. Those in possession of an undergraduate degree in the requested area of instruction, will be considered for an instructor position, a full-time, non-promotable, non-tenure track appointment that will be renewed annually for a maximum of five years in the appointment.

If hired as an instructor, the incumbent will be expected to make satisfactory progress toward and complete a master’s degree within the initial five-year appointment period. As part of the UNL benefits package, the University offers tuition remission for full-time employees, up to 15 credit hours per year. Once the master’s degree is earned

within that period, the position will advance to an assistant extension educator appointment.

The Positive Youth Development – 4-H extension professional will contribute to the integrated (extension, research, and teaching) land-grant mission of the home unit and IANR as an effective scholar and citizen, including supporting student recruitment and IANR science literacy. PROGRAMMATIC RESPONSIBILITIES (approximately 80%) Uses innovative strategies and current technologies to support a robust 4-H youth education program designed to 1) inspire youth to be young leaders and stewards of their individual pathways, 2) engage youth in learning experiences that allow them to strengthen their innovation and design thinking skills and practice those skills in real-life settings, and 3) support the development of entrepreneurial thinking and how that mindset can support their long-term goals.

This includes a variety of engagement methods including out-of-school programs, special interest groups, 4-H clubs, school enrichment, and other creative strategies that engage youth. Engages in a collaborative-learning environment with young people and volunteers to apply research-based information. Delivers educational programming for youth development programming statewide and within the assigned geographic region. Within their geographic region the extension professional will also engage with lead educators, extension advisory committees, and local stakeholders to determine needs and provide access to educational opportunities.

Works in a multi-disciplinary team environment with extension professionals and partners to translate and teach the latest research-based information. Uses entrepreneurial practices to secure grants, program fees, and partnerships to leverage the extension educational program’s resource base and reach. Partners with research faculty in action research that can be applied to educational programming. Practices effective extension scholarship by conducting needs backssments, identifying priorities, measuring program impact, and reporting results at professional meetings and in professional publications.

Develops a professional development plan by teaching to enhance and maintain professional expertise in youth development and extension pedagogy. ORGANIZATIONAL CITIZENSHIP/LEAD EDUCATOR ROL (approximately 20%) Serves in, contributes to, or supports the specific Lead Educator roles as described in the Roles and Responsibilities of the Lead Educator document found at myextension. unl. edu/lead-educator-position-description as determined in partnership with the supervisor(s). The focus for this education professional is Food, Nutrition & Health (FNH) with an expected demonstrated expertise in obesity prevention, nutrition, and health behavior change, and creating environments supportive of well-being and food systems.

The target audience is ages 0 -18 and the adults in families, communities, and environments who influence those ages. The outcomes of this focused extension professional include: Individual behavior patterns and environments that reduce youth

obesity and improve human well-being. A safe and diverse food supply with choices/access for people focused on health. Health Behavior change and translation of research should be evident in their primary responsibility of program development and delivery.

Nebraska faces the challenges of a high prevalence of obesity, foodborne illness, and disparities in food access and health status. Addressing interrelated determinants is key to improving health, well-being, health disparities, and quality of life.
