Basic understanding of mechanical design drawings. Experience working with other engineers, shop personnel, and QC inspectors to produce components. Strong written & verbal communication skills, good interpersonal skills, and ability to work in a team environment. Preferred Qualifications: A master’s degree in nuclear, metallurgical, or materials science engineering. At least 2 years of experience in the nuclear fuel fabrication field. The successful candidate should have a strong background in civil or structural engineering, the ability to provide review and analysis for engineering projects and nuclear safety basis documents, and the flexibility to learn and support other systems and projects at the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR). Major Duties/Responsibilities:
Preparation and maintenance of the HFIR safety basis documents, including the HFIR Safety Analysis Report (SAR), Cold Neutron Source Documented Safety Analysis (CS DSA), HFIR Technical Safety Requirements (TSRs), fuel shipping container Safety Analysis Reports for Packaging (SARP), and Probabilistic Risk backssment (PRA).
Perform analysis, testing, and research as necessary to support the HFIR beryllium reflector replacement and reactor pressure vessel replacement projects. Ensure technical compliance with 10 CFR Part 830 Subparts A and B, affecting reactor and facility safety, through implementation of ORNL Standards Based Management System (SBMS) and RRD procedures. Application of the
Unreviewed Safety Question (USQ) process per ORNL SBMS and RRD procedure directly to the HFIR and Cold Source Facility.
Interpreting and implementing DOE Natural Phenomena codes and regulations as well as nuclear facility structural materials and design codes. Perform seismic qualifications, analyses, and evaluations in accordance with DOE-STD-1020 and -021, and International Building Code. Perform research and/or testing needed to validate safety analysis assumptions or controls. Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks on time and adapt to evolving needs.
