We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will support the Particle Fuel Forms (PFF) Group in the Nuclear Fuel Development (NFD) Section within the Nuclear Energy and Fuel Cycle Division. The PFF Group is a global leader in coated particle fuel research for advanced reactors (e. g. tristructural isotropic (TRISO) coated particle
fuel) and emerging nuclear technologies (e. g. space nuclear propulsion). The PFF group supports activities related to both fabrication and post-irradiation examination of coated particle fuel and fuel forms.
This position would directly support the DOE’s Office of Nuclear Energy’s Advanced Gas Reactor Fuel Development and Qualification (AGR) Program’s post-irradiation examination (PIE) activities at ORNL. The activities include analysis of radionuclide retention after irradiation and high-temperature testing and evaluation of overall TRISO particle fuel performance. The role’s primary focus will be integrating with experimental activities, interpreting fission product release data, and
leading integration of ORNL-generated AGR program data into the Nuclear Data Management and Analysis System (NDMAS).
The successful candidate will strongly collaborate with staff within the PFF and the Nuclear Fuel Development section. The Rotor Dynamics Engineer will perform research and development (R&D) in rotor dynamics, bearings, and suspension systems (including squeeze film dampers) of gas centrifuges for processing uranium-bearing and stable isotope compounds. Major Duties and Responsibilities Major duties will include
developing and executing research tasks focused on characterizing the dynamic performance of enrichment devices and their subassemblies.
This position will involve developing complex dynamic simulations of these devices. These activities will include using rotor analysis and design codes to predict rotor and suspension dynamic performance as part of either the rotor/suspension design or the test measurement evaluation process. This work may also include the modification of existing or the development of new dynamic models to extend analysis capabilities. The successful candidate will be heavily involved with developing and coordinating tests to validate these simulations.
Finally, the candidate will be responsible for understanding and contributing to detailed formal designs, test plans, test data analytics, and fabrication plans in coordination with stakeholder personnel. Major Duties/Responsibilities: Work with a team to move research concepts from exploratory prototype to delivered systems. Research, develop and implement machine learning-driven algorithms for improved computational efficiency and scalability. Apply sophisticated computing and machine learning capabilities to solve scientific challenges within ORNL. Build, test, and maintain software elements of these systems. Support modeling and simulation activities to exercise software elements. Support field exercises to demonstrate system capabilities. Provide technical leadership for software development teams.
Mentor new and junior technical staff. Basic Qualifications: A master’s degree in computer science, electrical or computer engineering, or other field relevant to the job duties. 4+ years of systems software experience. Experience developing machine learning approaches for scalable simulation and discrete event simulation. Experience programming in Python and C++. Preferred Qualifications: 6 or more years of experience relevant to the job duties. Experience with modelling and simulation of complex, interdisciplinary systems. Extensive experience working with Py Torch and Tensor Flow.
Knowledge of computer architecture, computer networking, and experience with the development of virtualization technologies and/or computer system simulations. Experience in software architecture and enterprise-scale application development for sophisticated scientific projects. Extensive experience in Internet of Things (IOT) applications, machine learning, cloud-based software deployment, and embedded systems. Experience in leading and working in Agile software development environments. research in optical/wireless communications, such as wide area networks and 4G, 5G and sensor networking • Investigate new research solutions for classical networks such as developing new AI/ML solutions for networks, extending low-level communication frameworks (e.
