Location: This postion is in INDOT's Central Office, Indianapolis. Role Overview: This position will serve as a Quality Assurance Intern for the Materials and Tests Division of the Indiana Department of Transportation. The Intern will be responsible for a variety of division projects and support. The objective of the position is to provide a valuable learning experience for the intern, as well as to assist the agency in completing their assignments and responsibilities.

The Intern will report to the Materials and Tests Director. A Day in the Life: Essential Duties/Responsibilities: The intern will assist with ongoing pilot projects utilizing INDOT’s Performance Validation initiative, which is aiming to mitigate risk on our biggest investments by assuring these projects are built with a high level of quality and consistency so the asset reliably performs for the full design life. This initiative includes the use of non-destructive testing to validate design properties and consistency, as well as improved Quality Control plans to ensure success.

The intern will assist with data collection, data analysis, site visits, collaboration with Research, initiative improvements, and reporting on progress. The intern will learn about the Division of Materials and Tests Materials Acceptance, Quality Testing, and Quality Assurance programs and brainstorm ideas for improvement and better reporting of success. This will be accomplished through direct discussions with staff, job shadowing, reviewing of documents, site visits, and attendance at meetings.

The intern will complete a report at the end of the summer documenting what they’ve learned and provide feedback and ideas to us for better methods and processes. The Intern will report to the Vincennes Senior Environmental Manager Supervisor. A Day in the Life: The essential functions of this role are as follows: Collects, researches, and digitizes environmental data.

Collects and analyzes field data. Main project will include completion of all environmental research and on-site investigations (with staff assistance) for the 2024/2025 capital program and maintenance program as assigned. Prepares environmental documents for various other INDOT projects, including the development and coordination of environmental related reports. Ensures compliance with federal & state regulations. Observes, checks, and performs construction activities interpreting road or bridge plans; prepare progress reports, providing communications with contractors to ensure procedures comply with INDOT standards and specifications.

May perform as an assistant project supervisor/engineer or supervise a small project. Complies with INDOT Safety Policies and Procedures; Performs work assigned by project supervisor/engineer ensuring that the required tests, measurements, and inspections are completed and recorded in a timely manner; Ensures work conforms with appropriate plans, specifications, procedures, and policies; Provides feedback to project supervisor/engineer for performance management of contractors; Performs job documentation tasks using site manager program, spreadsheets, or other computer programs; Performs related job duties as assigned.
