The Biosciences Division is focused on advancing science and technology to better understand complex biological systems and their relationship with the environment.

BSD has expertise and special facilities in genomics, computational systems biology, microbiology, microbial ecology, biophysics, and structural biology. Computational systems biology research includes methods development and use to analyze large scale omics, greenhouse, field, and clinical datasets to derive insights and hypotheses suitable for further experimental validation and

to improve researchers’ ability to further advance understanding of biological systems. We develop and apply computational methods to explore biological processes at all levels of life systems organization from atomistic to ecological scales.

The collection of omics, phenotyping and environmental data, and automation of its analysis and discovery, is becoming increasingly important as the scale of experiments grow and diversify for projects at ORNL including the Center for Bioenergy Innovation, Plant Microbe Interfaces, Secure Ecosystem Engineering and Design, Integrated Pennycress Resilience projects, funded by the DOE, and Biomedical projects, funded by the NIH and VA, and pandemic

prevention projects funded by the NSF and other government agencies, among other efforts that also include access to suitable large-scale computational resources.

In this position, you will be taking an important role in the development of approaches for systems biology, explainable-AI, network analysis, and information flow. The new Department of Host-Microbe Interactions is seeking a talented and highly motivated Principal Bioinformatics Research Scientist or Lead Bioinformatics Research Scientist with extensive experience in large-scale microbial genomic data analysis to create and direct the new Microbial Computational Genomics and Bioinformatics Laboratory at St.

Jude Children's Research Hospital. The Microbial Computational Genomics and Bioinformatics Laboratory's mission is to support initiatives

on microbial genomic, phylogenomic, and computational needs of researchers in the Department of Host-Microbe Interactions and the Center for Infectious Disease Research.

The laboratory is a major initiative backed by substantial support as a part of our institutional strategic plan and will be fully integrated with research in microbial evolution, microbial pathogenesis, virology, the microbiome, computational biology, and data sciences at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. The focus of this position is on bacterial and viral genomics, using specimens and data obtained from our healthcare system to address key questions such as the acquisition of antimicrobial resistance, genome heterogeneity,

outbreaks, transmission, and the identification of potential targets for the generation of novel therapies.

This will be achieved using a combination of approaches, including: short-and long-read whole genome sequencing; phylogenomic, transcriptomic, and bioinformatics approaches involving electronic health data; and experimental data generated by collaborating partners. The successful candidate will assemble a team of Ph. The director will present research findings at project meetings, scientific conferences, and outreach/training events. There will be opportunities to initiate new projects and collaborate with other groups at St. Jude, including clinicians, basic scientists, and data scientists. The ideal candidate should have: A Ph D and extensive postdoctoral experience in microbial genomics, phylogenomics, bioinformatics, computational biology, and data science.

The position of Research Scientist is an individual holding a Ph. D or equivalent terminal degree who will play a major role in leading the project in collaboration with the PI and external collaborators. The rank of research scientist is a staff appointment, with a salary range between $55,000-$65,000 and for international applicants, the ability to apply via the H1B Visa program. Qualified candidates should have:

· Ph D/MD/DVM in any of the following: Immunology, Infectious Disease, Virology, Bioinformatics, Microbiology, or related field. · Strong publication record and excellent communication skills· Independence, creativity, and ability to work well with others.
