Adjunct Instructors may be asked to communicate and collaborate with other faculty members of multi-section courses but will not be asked to develop new course syllabi on their own. On a part-time limited basis, the Adjunct Faculty member’s primary academic functions include teaching, discovering, creating, and reporting knowledge to a diverse set of students. Essential Functions On a part-time basis, conduct and teach assigned undergraduate courses, studios, lectures, and/or seminars. UC’s annual budget tops $1.65 billion and its endowment totals $1.8 billion. About the Department The Archives and Rare Books Library holds the University's Rare Books, University Archives, Local Government Records, Urban Studies Collections, and German-Americana collections. The Archives

and Rare Books Library is located on the 8th floor of Blegen Library on the University of Cincinnati's uptown campus. During the 2021-2022 academic year, ARB served more than 600 users via in-person appointments, phone, and email reference.

ARB serves the University of Cincinnati faculty, students, and staff along with researchers and members of the general public from around the world. ARB faculty and staff teach and co-teach with faculty from a variety of disciplines using the archival and rare book collections. Job Overview Full-time tenure-track faculty appointment responsible for developing and implementing digital workflows including, but not limited to, born-digital archives, the

digitization of existing hard copy materials, and the digital preservation of established electronic records.

Coordinates and provides technological support for ARB staff including the ARB website, discovery of digital content, and maintenance of digital collections and exhibitions. Receives general direction from and reports to the head of the Archives & Rare Books Library (ARB). For digital initiatives and digital collection building projects, works with UCL Contents Services staff. Essential Functions Provides expertise on workflows, tools, and best practices to support the management of born digital content, including, but not limited to emails, web content, social media, and content on legacy physical media.

Strategize, develop, and communicate processes for accessioning, ingesting, processing, describing, and preserving born-digital materials with ARB’s collections. Oversee the digitization of in-house materials, including manuscripts, photographs, and printed materials, and the creation of accompanying metadata; coordinates with outside vendors for other formats as needed. Collaborates in planning and creating digital collections, including digital object creation or organization of born-digital objects, metadata creation, and collection building through both batch and online methods.

Serves on Libraries or University-wide teams as needed to create digital collections workflow as well as discovery and access solutions. Organizes and creates online access to born-digital materials collected for collections or records management. Maintains web applications on the ARB website and collaborates in the support of other UC Libraries websites, using standards-compliant markup, web technologies, and best practices in accordance with UC website policies and hardware/software standards and practices. Provides reference service for born-digital records and digital content as needed.

Essential Functions Continued Assists in maintaining ARB collection databases, including collection descriptions, images, and documents; maintains ARB web content as provided by the Head of the Archives & Rare Books Library. Provides oral and written reports as directed. Supervise student assistants as needed. Promotes digital projects through blog posts and social media. Participate in appropriate, meetings, committees and organizations related to the duties and responsibilities of the department, and in support of UC Libraries programs and organizations.

Required Education Master's degree in library science or information science from an ALA-accredited institution with a demonstrated understanding of digital librarianship, or a graduate degree in a related field. Required Experience Familiarity with archival and special collections standards and best practices, especially as they relate to the particular issues posed by born-digital content. Experience with digital collections architecture and infrastructure, and current standards and practices for digital collections. General knowledge of digital libraries, institutional repositories, and digital preservation.

Experience working with archival collections and digital archival collections, as well as automated archival databases. General knowledge of standards-based metadata schema, including the Extended Dublin Core metadata schema. Familiarity with digital asset management systems. General knowledge in the development and maintenance of web sites. General knowledge of web technologies such as html, xml, CSS and Java Script. Knowledge and ability to produce and optimize images for the web, including experience with image editing software. Demonstrated experience in providing exceptional customer service.

Demonstrated record of ongoing professional development and contribution, and ability to meet UC Libraries reappointment, promotion and tenure requirements. Ability to think analytically, to use effective verbal and written communication, including the use of computer technology, and to remember details and concentrate on tasks. Physical requirements include attending work-related meetings, directing others, and the ability to lift materials weighing up to 25 pounds with or without accommodation. Additional Qualifications Considered Additional graduate degree in a related field.

Experience processing analog archival collections. Knowledge of multiple metadata schemas in addition to Extended Dublin Core, such as VRA, MODS and METS. Knowledge of the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) XML-based standard. Experience using Adobe Photoshop (or similar image editing software) and Adobe Dreamweaver (or similar web development software). Knowledge of current developments in linked data, semantic web applications and the Resource Description Framework (RDF). Working knowledge of or experience with institutional repository or digital collection platforms, such as CONTENTdm, Islandora: DSpace, or others.

Experience with content management systems (CMS) and developing functional specifications for integrating digital repositories with a CMS-based front-end.
