Participates in fire drills, attends classes in firefighting, rescue emergency medical, hazardous materials, and related subjects. Operates radio and other communication equipment. Participates in the inspection of buildings, hydrants, and other structures in fire prevention programs. Maintains fire equipment, apparatus and facilities. Performs minor repairs to departmental equipment. Performs general

maintenance work in the upkeep of fire facilities and equipment; cleans and washes walls and floors; cares for grounds around station; makes minor repairs; washes, hangs and dries hose; washes, cleans, polishes, maintains and tests apparatus and equipment.

Performs salvage operations such as throwing salvage covers, sweeping water, and removing debris. Participates in training to develop and maintain certifications, skills, and knowledge as it relates to fire prevention, suppression, rescue and EMS care and skills. Various duties as assigned in order to complete training necessary for advancement to Fire Fighter II. Employees may not perform the duties of a higher classification without

the assignment being designated in writing and approved by the Deputy Chief of Operations, the Fire Chief or City Manager.

Pay for stepping up will be provided in accordance with Texas Local Government Code 141.033(b). The employee must have the ability to work well with others and have a good/pleasant attitude. Performs other essential duties as required to achieve successful operations of the department. Ability to effectively communicate and work with citizens who may have complaints on services provided. Must be able to have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with city officials, city employees, and representatives of government agencies, media, and the general public.

Must be able to follow directions. Regular and timely attendance is an essential job function. PERIPHERAL DUTIES: Serves as a member of various employee committees as assigned. Other Duties as assigned. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: High school diploma or GED equivalent. No specific work experience level required. Must possess a valid Texas Driver's Class B Driver's License without record of suspension or revocation in any State within six (6) months from date of hire. Certificates and Licenses Required - Must be Certified by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection as a Basic Structural Firefighter.

Must be Certified by the Texas Department of State Health Services as either an Emergency Medical Technician - Basic, Intermediate or Paramedic. Unless already Paramedic Certified or Licensed, must be enrolled in a Paramedic program within one year, obtain Paramedic Certification (within 180 days of issuance of certificate of course completion) and maintain Certification or Licensure for remainder of employment. Certification of attendance to Courage to Be Safe and Traffic Incident Management Program training required within 6 months of employment.

Must not have any felony convictions or disqualifying criminal histories. Must be able to proficiently read and write the English language. Must successfully pass entry-level fire examination. Must pass a medical exam which includes a vision exam and hearing exam. Must pass the Department's physical agility test and drug test. Certification in NIMS ICS 100, 200, 700, & 800 required within 6 months of employment. Must meet City of Copperas Cove's response time requirements. May be required to pass a polygraph examination and psychological test. PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS: Texas Commission on Fire Protection Driver Operator-Pumper Certification.

Texas Department of State Health Services Paramedic Certification or License. Observes, monitors, and supervises the movement of inmates. Ensures inmate compliance with rules and regulations by correcting negative behavior through positive reinforcement or a written report of violations to a supervisor for disciplinary action.

Conducts searches of inmates’ cells and common areas for items of contraband. Prepares reports on inmate misconduct, security issues, and general informational reports. Conducts accurate inmate counts at prescribed times to ensure that all inmates are accounted for. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Essential Functions Ability to stand for extended periods of time, often in excess of 3 to 4 hours. Ability to lift/carry or assist another to lift/carry

in excess of 100 pounds (occasionally), for a span up to ¼ mile. Ability to transverse stairs up to four stories and climb ladders as required for duty assignments.

Ability to engage in physical exertion at any given moment in response to an emergency situation or to control or subdue a resisting inmate and supervise such actions. Stamina to avoid health related issues and the ability to deal with stress daily. Ability to walk at least one mile. Ability to handle/operate all security, safety, maintenance, and other equipment relevant to the position, including but not limited to weapons/firearms, restraints, keys, radios, telephones, computers, copiers, air packs, vehicle, etc.

Vision correctable to 20/20 and hearing abilities that are natural or corrected to the normal range of hearing.

May not be affected by color blindness to any degree which would prevent him/her from effectively performing job duties. Ability to pull grill gates and doors (up to 30 lbs. ) at least three times daily. Ability to reach overhead at full arm’s length regularly. MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Possess a high school diploma or GED certificate from an accredited agency. Must be at least 21 years of age or older - we will consider 18-20 years of age based on maturity and documented work experience. No felony convictions or misdemeanors for job related offenses.

Not presently serving probation or parole. Have a valid PA driver’s license. MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Excellent oral and written communication skills. Excellent planning skills, decision-making skills, and organizational skills. Participate and adhere to employee drug testing procedures. Ability to complete all pre-employment screening. Ability to handle/operate security and safety equipment relevant to the position, including weapons/firearms, restraints, two-way radios, keys, and air packs, etc. Demonstrate acceptable inter-personal communication (IPC) skills as they relate to staff and inmates Ability to communicate effectively (in English) orally and in writing, and demonstrate basic computer literacy.

Attend and successfully complete the Berks County Jail System Correctional Officer Basic Orientation Training Program. Qualify with all the jail’s duty weapons. Be certified in, or successfully complete as part of training, First Aid and Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation certification. Work in any Berks County Jail System facility at any post or position as assigned and needed. Be capable of working any shift, any day, including holidays and traditional weekends.

Attend and successfully complete in-service training on any of the topics taught there. Ability to handle stress. Physical presence in the facility is required. WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Requires working within the confines of a secure jail Requires working in loud, small, and communal workspaces Requires working in an environment where personal safety may be of concern Requires working in an environment where there is possibility of foul odors Requires working in extreme heat and/or cold Requires working beyond 8 hours a day daily. May require working an additional 8-hour shift (forced overtime) with little or no prior notice to ensure minimum staffing on the next shift.

Requires working with inmates (prostitutes, drug addicts, etc. ) in a potentially high-risk communicable disease environment (AIDS, tuberculosis, hepatitis, etc. ), where some inmates are incarcerated for violent crimes including murder.
