We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to help advance our understanding of quantum materials through experimental studies of bulk single crystals in our Correlated Quantum Materials Project. The position resides in the Correlated Electron Materials Group in the Materials Science and Technology Division, Physical Sciences
Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). This project uses crystal growth and physical property measurements to develop, understand, and control new and emerging quantum materials.
Much of the work emphasizes magnetism and quasi-2D systems. Some aspects of the project directly address topology while others emphasize electron correlations, and the most interesting physics problems often involve an intersection of the two. Major Duties/Responsibilities: As part of our team, you will have opportunities for self-directed research in areas aligning with our priorities. You will be expected to lead your own synthesis, measurements, and analysis efforts to characterize the structural,
electronic, and magnetic properties of bulk materials, develop an understanding of their underlying physics, and tune them toward their most interesting ground states and behaviors.
You will be expected to lead the writing of research papers resulting from your work with support from the group and collaborators in a timely manner. Teamwork within the group is a critical aspect of our research, and the group has strong skills in materials synthesis, particularly single crystal growth, and characterization. our team, you will support ongoing projects targeting the analysis and design of utility-scale quantum computers. In collaboration with experts in quantum algorithms and quantum computer hardware, you will develop analytical methods and software tools to quantify logical and physical resources for fault-tolerant, utility-scale quantum computing, with the goals of backssing feasibility and identifying tradeoffs in the design space.

Duties and Responsibilities: Participate in new and ongoing research in quantum communication, quantum computing, and quantum-enhanced sensing. Formulate novel quantum information solutions to problems of national interest and plan and execute the research and development necessary for the practical implementation of those solutions.
Lead and take part in multiple R&D projects. Interpret, report, and present research concepts and results to national audiences at all levels. Work with customers independently or in teams to develop requirements and proposals, conduct research, and produce working prototypes for demonstration. Write peer-reviewed papers, technical reports, and proposals
for internal and external release and must represent the organization by giving technical presentations in large public forums. Mentor early career research staff, postdocs and students.
Basic Qualifications: A Ph. D. in physics, optics, computer science, or a directly related field. 6+ years of experience in theoretical and/or experimental quantum information outside of Ph. D. Preferred Qualifications: 8-10+ years of quantum information work experience at a tertiary institution or in an appropriate industry or government laboratory. Independent research competence as demonstrated by a significant number of national and/or international peer-reviewed publications and a sustained publication
record. Successful supervision of junior research staff and demonstrated success in research project management.
