Laboratory to explore fundamental science challenges and to carry out the research needed to accelerate the delivery of solutions to the marketplace. We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will support the Biostatistics and Biomedical Informatics Group in the Computational Sciences and Engineering Division, Computing and Computational Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

The position will work as part of a crosscutting initiative for Enzyme Engineering funded by the ORNL Director’s Research and Development Program. The Enzyme Engineering Initiative is developing a high-throughput Design-Build-Test-Learn pipeline for engineering enzymes that catalyze

reactions at materials interfaces. In this position, you will work in a collaborative and interdisciplinary team with experimental and computational scientists to engineer proteins interacting with materials for plastics degradation, metal binding, and material synthesis.

You will be expected to apply and develop machine learning approaches for protein design and to integrate these approaches with computational structural biology. Group Leader will be responsible for the day-to-day operation, management, and program development of the group and its R&D portfolio in the areas of chemistry, geochemistry, forensics, nuclear non-proliferation and national/international security with emphasis in the field of inorganic mass spectrometry and chemical separations and chemistry routines for the detection of ultra-trace analytes.

The group’s focus areas are in the development of instrumentation and methodologies for high precision traceable methods for isotopics, elemental assays, and quantification of trace impurities in bulk, nuclear, and environmental matrices. This position resides in the Nuclear Analytical Chemistry

(NAC) Section, CSD, Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at ORNL. As the R&D Group Leader, you will lead a highly functional team of peers with the primary goal of pursuing global scientific leadership in the field of analytical sciences.

This will include establishing relationships and writing proposals to develop new research focus areas and strengthen current programs and capabilities and to advance knowledge and/or technology in the analytical sciences. You will also lead research for the development of prototypes of analytical instruments and innovative devices for measurements as well as methodologies for mass spectrometry to address challenging analytical problems. Other expectations

of the Leader are to champion ORNL’s culture of scientific excellence within the group to continue to shape and scale up staff excellence and impact in R&D and projects.

Experience with high precision isotope ratio measurements. Related experience in separations chemistry particularly with the actinide elements would be beneficial. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.

Biology Group in the Biosciences Division (BSD), Biological and Environmental Systems Sciences (BESSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The Biosciences Division is focused on advancing science and technology to better understand complex biological systems and their relationship with the environment.

BSD has expertise and special facilities in genomics, computational systems biology, microbiology, microbial ecology, biophysics, and structural biology. Computational systems biology research includes methods development and use to analyze large scale omics, greenhouse, field, and clinical datasets to derive insights and hypotheses suitable for further experimental validation and

to improve researchers’ ability to further advance understanding of biological systems. We develop and apply computational methods to explore biological processes at all levels of life systems organization from atomistic to ecological scales.

The collection of omics, phenotyping and environmental data, and automation of its analysis and discovery, is becoming increasingly important as the scale of experiments grow and diversify for projects at ORNL including the Center for Bioenergy Innovation, Plant Microbe Interfaces, Secure Ecosystem Engineering and Design, Integrated Pennycress Resilience projects, funded by the DOE, and Biomedical projects, funded by the NIH and VA, and pandemic
