Job Summary Battelle’s Aviation Security Division provides research development test and evaluation services to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Transportation Security Laboratory (TSL).

The qualified candidate for this position will support the TSL Commercial Aviation Vulnerability Mitigation (CAVM) project. This project entails live-fire test planning, instrumentation, and test result analysis to inform aircraft design, explosive mitigation techniques and baggage screening policies for improving commercial

aviation security. Responsibilities Support the development of test matrices and test planning for a range of DHS conducted blast vulnerability and mitigation testing using DHS supplied commercial aircraft test assets as well as other DHS supplied test assets.

Assist DHS and its Do D contractor in the preparation, set up, and conduct of explosive vulnerability and mitigation test activities, including the identification, configuration, operation, and support of the necessary instrumentation (to be provided by DHS or its Do D contractor) for blast response measurement using digital image correlation technology and other methods (blast overpressure pressure gauges, optical measurement techniques,

etc. Testing will be conducted at DHS’s Do D contractor facilities (US Army Aberdeen Proving Grounds, MD).

Acquire, compile, store, reduce, and analyze instrumentation test data acquired during DHS sponsored explosive vulnerability and mitigation testing. Assist with predictive blast response modeling and simulation to support test planning. Draft instrumentation test plans and test result analysis reports. Key Qualifications Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Mechanical Engineering and have at least 2 or more years of experience OR a master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Mechanical Engineering with experience that demonstrates professional knowledge of system testing.

Knowledge and experience with testing and evaluation. Knowledge and experience in test instrumentation and data acquisition. Knowledge of modeling and simulation of mechanical loads. Strong oral and written communication skills, that includes technical writing proficiency. Highly motivated and a self-starter with a strong desire to learn. Sole US Citizenship with eligibility and willingness to obtain and maintain a Do D Secret Security Clearance and to obtain both TSA and DHS Suitability. Preferred Qualifications Prior experience working for TSA or DHS.

Active Do D Secret security clearance. Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Mechanical Engineering and have at least 3 or more years of experience OR a master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Mechanical Engineering with experience that demonstrates professional knowledge of system testing. Knowledge and experience in explosive testing including blast effects measurement testing and other types of related explosive tests. Knowledge and experience in instrumentation and data acquisition for explosive testing. Expertise in explosive performance measurement techniques and explosive test results instrumentation interpretation using blast pressure gauges, strain gauges, accelerometers, high-speed cameras for high-speed video coverage (including digital image correlation techniques) and other applicable blast test measurement instrumentation techniques.
