What's your day like? As a new EMT at Richmond County Ambulance Service, you can expect an exciting and fast-paced work environment. Your main responsibility will be to respond to emergency calls and provide immediate medical assistance to patients. in accordance with the most current edition of the US DOT " Emergency Medical Technician: National Standard Curriculum" as modified by the NYS DOH and NYC REMAC. DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: Responds to calls when dispatched. Reads maps, may drive ambulance to emergency site using most expeditious route permitted by weather and road conditions.

Observes all traffic ordinances and regulations. Uses appropriate body substance isolation procedures. backsses the safety of the scene, gains access to the patient, backsses extent of injury or illness. Extricates patient from entrapment. Communicates with dispatcher requesting additional assistance or services as necessary. Determines nature

of illness or injury. Visually inspects for medical identification emblems to aid in care (medical bracelet, charm, etc. ) Uses prescribed techniques and equipment to provide patient care.

Provides additional emergency care following established protocols. backsses and monitors vital signs and general appearance of patient for change. Makes determination regarding patient status and priority for emergency care using established criteria. Reassures patient, family members and bystanders. Assists with lifting, carrying and properly loading patient into the ambulance. Avoids mishandling patient and undue haste. Determines appropriate medical facility to which patient will be transported.

Transports patient to medical facility providing ongoing medical care as necessary enroute.

Reports nature of injury or illness to receiving facility. Asks for medical direction from medical control physician and carries out medical control orders as appropriate. Assists in moving patient from ambulance into medical facility. Reports verbally and in writing observations of the patient's emergency and care provided. Complies with regulations in handling deceased, notifies authorities and arranges for protection of property and evidence at scene. Replaces supplies, properly disposes of medical waste. Properly cleans contaminated equipment according to established guidelines/policies.

Checks all equipment for future readiness. Maintains ambulance in operable condition. Ensures cleanliness and organization of ambulance, its equipment and supplies. Determines vehicle readiness by checking operator maintainable fluid, fuel and air pressure levels. Maintains familiarity with all specialized equipment. Must assist in weighing patients at hemodialysis centers and assist with other similar tasks as requested by a facility. Must demonstrate competency in backssment of a patient, handling emergencies using Basic Life Support equipment and techniques. Must be able to perform CPR, control bleeding, provide non- invasive treatment of hypoperfusion, stabilize / immobilize injured bones and the spine, manage environmental emergencies and emergency childbirth.

Must be able to use an automatic external defibrillator (AED). Must be able to assist patients with self-administration or administer emergency medications as described in state or local protocol. PHYSICAL STRENGTH REQUIRED: Must be able to lift a minimum of 250 pounds with assistance from one other qualified individual. Must be able to lift and move a 50-75 lb. ambulance stretcher with the help of one qualified individual.

Must be able to lift a 175 lb. patient (in various positions, i. e. while lying on the floor, the bed, in an automobile, etc. ) with the help of one qualified individual onto a stretcher. ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: Must be adaptive to work in all types of weather conditions, including, but not limited to, rain, snow, heat, etc. Due to the uncontrolled environment in which the EMT-B works, he/she may be subjected to predisposing themselves to be at risk for: A. bodily harm B. exposure to bloodborne pathogens and other potentially infectious materials (OPIM). KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Minimum Education: Must possess a High School Diploma or equivalent.

Where applicable and as required must maintain Continuing Education. Contact With Others: Co-workers, clients, patients and families, medical personnel. Must be able to write, read and speak English fluently. Analytical Demands: Must be able to think and act calmly and quickly in emergency situations. Certification, Licensure, Registration: Licensed as an EMT-B by the State Division of Emergency Medical Services and maintained in good standing. Must possess a current American Heart Association CPR certification and maintain in good standing.

Must possess a valid New York State Driver's License in state of, and be eligible for driving privileges based on current policies and procedures.
