D. in a field relevant to performing research related to drinking water, wastewater, and water reuse applications. The ideal candidate will have experience with molecular assays, including quantitative PCR (q PCR), digital PCR (d PCR), and sequencing, for quantification and characterization of microorganisms in environmental water matrices. The ideal candidate will have experience generating and using molecular datasets in the context of microbial source tracking (MST), wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE), and/or quantitative microbial risk backssment (QMRA).

The ideal candidate will also have knowledge and experience operating treatment processes at the bench-, pilot-, or full-scale. Experience in acquiring external grant funding and publishing related articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals is preferred. GENERAL PURPOSE Under direction, conducts advanced microbiology research studies using complex, state-of-the-art methodologies and instrumentation in a Water Quality Research and Development Laboratory; develops new and improved methods for the detection, quantification and analysis of microbiological constituents of emerging concern (CECs); backsses treatment process efficacy related to the removal or inactivation of microbiological constituents in raw, potable and environmental water samples; and performs related duties as assigned.

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of: Theory, principles, practices, methods, chemical and agents used in the culture, microscopy and molecular testing of microbiological water quality; water sample preparation methods; laboratory procedures for water analysis; methods and processes used in water treatment; federal EPA regulations and the Safe Drinking Water Act; the operation and maintenance of applicable complex laboratory instrumentation and related computer programs and software; programmable laboratory equipment; federal EPA methodologies; the use of standard laboratory glassware, beakers, flasks, pipettes and other equipment; safe laboratory practices and procedures; quality control techniques.

Ability to: Operate a computer and complex automated/programmable laboratory equipment; apply principles and scientific methods to the development of new methodologies in the assigned discipline; operate complex instrumentation and equipment for culture, microscopy and molecular analysis of microbiological water quality; understand and carry out testing and experimental protocols; calibrate, maintain and perform minor repairs on laboratory equipment; understand and carry out testing and experimental protocols; make complex mathematical calculations; prepare accurate reports and records of test results and special analyses; conduct original research; present scientific data clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers; provide guidance and direction to less experienced professional and technical staff.

Training and Experience: A typical way of obtaining the knowledge, skills and abilities outlined above is graduation from a college or university with a major in environmental engineering or microbiology or a closely related field, and four years of increasingly responsible microbiological laboratory experience, two of which focused on the utilization of applicable complex instrumentation for conducting water analysis; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

A graduate degree in a relevant field is desired but not required. Licenses; Certificates: Special Requirements: A valid Nevada driver’s license and the ability to maintain insurability under the District’s Vehicle Insurance Policy.
