Main Purpose and Function The Recreation Programmer II performs supervisory and recreation programming work by assisting a Recreation Supervisor or Coordinator in the development, coordination and implementation of a community recreation program, at West Point Grey
Community Centre. The position assumes responsibility for directing segments of an approved community recreation program, provides guidance and recommendations to community program committees, recruits and instructs part-time staff, schedules, evaluates and reports on programs, performs moderately complex administrative duties and acts for a superior on an assigned shift.
Specific Duties/Responsibilities Responsible for the overall planning and implementation of programs and services, assumes responsibility for coordinating and directing in one or more areas Responsible for overseeing the following portfolios: Adult/Seniors programming, Fitness Centre, Pottery Studio Programming and Management,
OH&S worker Rep and Facility Maintenance. Makes recommendations on the development, implementation and discontinuation of recreation programs and events.
Provides guidance and information to community groups and committees related to the work performed; promotes interest and participation in program activities; establishes and maintains liaison with agencies and community groups. Recruits, instructs and directs group leaders, part-time staff and volunteers, and supervises the work of other full-time and part-time staff involved in approved recreation programs, provides an orientation to same. Recruits and supervises program instructors and contractors, ensures that all required operating procedures are met, including proper screening of those working with vulnerable populations In consultation with peers, arranges for and schedules space within the assigned facilities or area; participates in the review of centre policies and procedures.
Monitors programs, keeps statistical records and prepares narrative evaluations of programs. Maintains a variety of operating, and administrative records, provides cost and revenue estimates for a segment of the community centre recreation programs and assists in overseeing collection and accounting for admissions and fees for same.
Initiates requisitions for materials and equipment within budgetary limits and arranges for the disposal of unsafe, worn or obsolete equipment. Prepares publicity material for the promotion of programs or events. Enforces rules and regulations and deals consistently and tactfully with groups or individuals who fail to observe these and acts in the absence of a superior, on an assigned shift. Is current with trends, issues and advocacy in recreation programming and services Other duties/responsibilities as assigned The current schedule is Sunday to Thursday with one evening shift, but this schedule is subject to change based on operational needs.
Qualifications: Education and Experience: Post-secondary degree in Recreation or a related discipline and sound experience related to the work; OR, completion of a post-secondary degree in any discipline or an approved diploma course in recreation, plus considerable experience related to the work. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Considerable knowledge of the philosophy and objectives of a planned community recreation program. Considerable knowledge of the methods, materials, equipment and practices involved in conducting community recreation programs.
Working knowledge of the policies of the Board of Parks and Recreation as applied to community recreation. Working knowledge of the procedures and programming requirements in at least one and preferably more of the following areas: amateur sports, physical fitness, arts and crafts, aquatics, ice surface, and social, cultural or adapted programming Working knowledge of the fundamentals of program leadership and recreational instruction. Knowledge and proficiency in the use of Safari, SAP, Microsoft Office, Adobe In Design and Photoshop, and Web-designing Software.
Ability to organize, promote and direct others in a variety of group recreational activities. Ability to successfully organize and coordinate special events. Ability to provide guidance to community recreation program committees and to promote interest and participation in program activities. Ability to recruit, instruct, provide orientation, assign, and review the work of recreational personnel. Ability to meet and deal tactfully with the public and maintain control and exercise discipline Ability in contemporary supervisory techniques including leadership, problem solving and team development.
Ability to create and maintain good working relationships with co-workers and outside organizations. Ability to recognize, respect and work well with people’s diversity and individual differences Ability to enforce policy with calmness, firmness and fairness Ability to maintain statistical, financial and clerical records and write reports. Skill in the use of recreational equipment and the performance of various recreational activities. Ability to identify priorities, set goals, analyzes information and provides solutions. Ability to deal effectively with a wide range of people and in stressful situations.

Exercise independent judgement in emergencies and on routine matters. Ability to effectively utilize conflict resolution and corrective discipline skills. Ability to work independently and make decisions regarding aspects of facility operations. Driver’s License and Record Checks: A Police Record Check is a requirement of this position. A clearance requires the absence of any criminal charges or convictions related to this position.
A valid B. C. driver’s license is required. The license must not include any restrictions that would affect the ability to legally and safely carry out job responsibilities. Local area travel and transportation arrangements must meet the operational requirements of the Board of Parks and Recreation and Driver Services The City’s COVID-19 vaccination policy is currently suspended and as a result, vaccination against COVID-19 is not required at this time.
